Central Prison, Hyderabad

The Central Prison, Hyderabad is one of the oldest jails in the state and is located in the old city of Hyderabad. The chief architect of the jail was Sri Nawab Khan Bahadur Mirza Baig, who designed it in the year 1876. The prison is headed by the Superintendent of Jails and has an authorized capacity of 1,250 inmates, covering the jurisdiction of both twin cities, Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Comprises 23 barracks that house various categories of prisoners, including hardcore criminals, Naxalites, habitual offenders, undertrial prisoners, convicts, civil prisoners, and detenues. After the relocation of the prison, its jurisdiction has been extended beyond the twin cities, and the present average inmate population is around 1,750.

The prison has an authorized staff strength of 253, including executive, ministerial, technical staff, and fourth-class employees. Additionally, the Central Prison, Hyderabad provides video linkage facilities for prisoners to attend court hearings and virtual interviews, in addition to physical court productions and in-person visits.

To provide employment opportunities for convict prisoners, the prison operates carpentry, steelwork, soap-making, and bookbinding units. Furthermore, petrol outlets under the brand name “My Nation” are maintained by the Prison Department at various locations in the city to offer employment to prisoners and support the rehabilitation of released inmates.
