Prisoner's Agricultural Colony, Cherlapalli

Prisoners’ Agricultural Colony, Cherlapalli was started in the year 1954 for the Welfare of Prisoners as well as giving them training in Agriculture and allied activities like Poultry, Dairy Farm, Vermi Compost Unit, Petrol Pump, My Nation Weigh Bridge, My Nation Water Servicing Centre, Fish ponds, S.S. industry under P.P.P. and so on, so that they can employ themselves in one of the trades in which they were trained in the Colony which will enable them to earn their livelihood without depending on others and they will not become a burden to the Society after their release.

There is no direct committal of Prisoners to this colony. Prisoners are brought from Closed Jails on a selective basis. Prisoners who have served 1/3 of their sentence in closed jails and have an agricultural background, are willing to work in Open Air Jails, have family bonds, and have not been sentenced under prohibitive Sections of law related to theft, Dacoity, Rape, and Offenses Against Women, will be selected by the Selection Committee and are transferred to Prisoners Agricultural Colonies on the orders of the Director General of Prisons.
